Where: The small village of Berryville: It's mostly rabbit and mouse with a council of rats calling the shots. Sort of a farming community that brings in money with exotic jellies and rare herbs. There is a company of porcine traders who deal in mushrooms and herbs who do business here.
How are laws enforced? Mostly by court decision and jury, which means justice is slow. There are decorated “Boss Guards” who take a share of tax money to patrol areas and keep the peace. Weapons are frowned upon, but many outsiders carry the, so locals are allowed to as well.
The mice prefer that wizards keep the peace, as they dislike bloodshed, so there is a circle of “Guardian Wizards” who perform much of the natural and social defense work. They are druidic in nature and work in teams, specializing in divination, cleansing and magical abjuration, but they do have magic that allows them to turn nature against villains.
The rats are “Quickblade” swordsmen, fencing and using their agility and technique to fell opponents rather than brute strength and massive weapons. Their weapon of choice is a variety of saber. It's minimally curved, making it good for stabbing, but has a slight curve at the end that is highly sharpened for slashing. They wear very little armor, settling for bracers and gauntlets with which they block enemy attacks. They do not carry crossbows, typically.
There IS a fox hunter who is fiercely loyal to the city, and he hunts villains with his bow.
Setting: It's in a pretty hilly area with lots of large trees, and many of the buildings are built into and on trees.
Neat features: Lots of water power. A waterwheel turns a master post, to which there are attached numerous bands that radiate out and turn smaller posts in other buildings around the village.
There are elevated catwalks that crisscross the perimeter of the village- this is for security as well as dry travel.
Costume: The fashion is a very simple garment that looks like an over sized, wool tunic They are knit or woven with intricate, natural patterns. There are a variety of natural colors present, so the palate of design is pretty open. People tend to dress with representations of their jobs woven into their clothing. Shoes are typically stiff canvas and cord- leather is used but not very commonly. It's extremely expensive, because it must all be blessed by the druids. *** Which is why the mercs can't sell here *** There are silver accents, though, and this leads the mercs to think that there may be a silvermine nearby.
Social outlets: There used to be a tradition of beerhouses, but as trade has increased and more outsiders have been coming around, the village decided to erect a central tavern and inn, where outsiders can be monitored and catered to simultaneously. There is a central market plaza surrounding the inn, where money is traded.. elsewhere in the village, barter is practiced. Prize winning local musicians, brewers, and food makers are allowed to sell inside the inn, and the menu is made by them.
